The Southwest Paintings

Prior to painting this work, I visually "absorbed" the walls of Canyon de Chelly, Arizona over a period of three years.  The canyon was home to the ancient pueblo dwellers known as the Anasazi or “Ancient Ones”. This painting required expanse, literally, to illustrate my vision.  I purchased stretchers and canvas from Artisan art supply in Santa Fe, had a large canvas bag made in Albuquerque, and assembled the canvas on a patio offered by Mr. Ortega, owner of the historic El Rancho Hotel in Gallup.  Then I was ready to return to Canyon de Chelly to paint.

The majesty of the canyon walls, undulating in geological rhythm with occasional slits of darkness where the Anasazi reigned in quiet honor, inspired me.  In silence.

Oil on canvas in mahogany frame. 84"x36"
